Pokemon Special ch 411

Well, I was wonder why this game mechanic was absent from the manga. Turns out that it's a cheap way to cheat in battles.

I don't have any witty banter this time, probably because I'm going too fast. I'm trying to finish things up before New Years so this doesn't carry into next month. The particular scheduling method I'm using is doing a constant amount of pages everyday. In this case, it's about 30-35 pages a day. This method only really works for Pokemon Special, Mudazumo, and Ryuushika, since the chapters are small and easy. Other series have to be handled on a chapter-by-chapter basis.

Nanika Mochigatte Masu ka ch 1

In my ongoing attempt to monopolize all current manga from Kitoh, I have started translating Nanika Mochigatte Masu ka for Animexis. This manga is about psychic powers, and yes, people do actually die in this manga. Next chapter has the first fatality, if I'm not mistaken.

By the way, this might be a bad thing for me to say as a translator, but I'm not entirely sure what the title means. "Mochigatte" isn't a verb or adjective conjugation of any kind. The official title is"Nanika Mochigatte", not "Nanikamo Chigatte", so that's out too. I'm guessing that it's a corruption of "machigau" (to be mistaken).

Anyways, go to Animexis to check it out. Kanapox tells me that the second joint project should be released soon as well.

(Oh, and I'm not planning to monopolize all Kitoh manga. Sorry, those who wanted me to translate Owari to Hajimari no Miles)

Finally, someone notices this! Jeez, not even the holders themselves noticed that they have a strong tendency to get into "final" battles.

Oh, and ignore the message written in Chinese. I already exhausted all routes to try to contact the Chinese scanlators on Baidu who keep on using my releases but not my sources. I know that this site is probably blocked, but it's worth one final try.

Online Manga Downloader 0.0.2 (Now 0.0.2.1)

Does everyone like to release on Christmas Eve/Day that much? I frequently refresh the latest releases on M^U, and release list on the 24th was twice as long as usual. I can't wait to see how long the list on the 25th will be.

My release for the 24th (lapsed into the 25th, but whatever) is more modest.

Edit (December 26th): Bug with GGOnline scraper fixed in 0.0.2.1

I made lots of changes and some more that I've forgot. Here are the major ones:
  • Club Sunday: Club Sunday scraping and downloading is now integrated with the downloader. That means about 300 chapters from 170 series/oneshots are added. Due to the way that I wrote my scraper, it's actually more efficient than the GanGan Online or the Yahoo! Comic scrapers; it takes about 30 seconds to scrape all of them, because it only gets 25 pages. Unfortunately, the other scrapers can't be optimized like it due to how their sites are organized.

Nagato and I discovered a bug with his original PCViewer release. For the otk key to be correct for the chapter you're downloading, it has to be scraped from a page with the chapter on it. This version of OMD has corrected for that, so all of the Club Sunday releases it lists should be correct (tell me if it doesn't!). If you insist on using pcviewer_shogakukan.py, change the line with "htmlurl" to use an URL with that chapter you're downloading.

  • Internal editor: Since there's so many new series, I doubt that I'll ever add all of them to series.yml, which gives extra information such as translated name and M^U ID. Thus, I added an editor in the client itself. You can add the information without going into series.yml.

There's an extra option under Preferences that allows you to submit your information to me. More specifically, to my new backup site. There's nothing there but the submission script and DB, so don't go there unless you want to give me your IP.

However, since I log your IP to protect against spammers (I feel overcome by a sense of irony), it's not enabled by default so you don't accidentally give me your IP.

  • Preferences: Now you can enable/disable the automatic update check and the aforementioned submission option, and change the download directory.

  • YAML: The download list is now in YAML instead of serialized Java objects so we don't get any version mismatches or anything. The code for loading YAML is pretty ugly, though.
The code is now on github, so go there if you want the source.

Regarding my scanlation releases, I'll most likely skip Our Alliance ch 2 for now and come back to it after I finish Pokemon Special 37 after New Years, along with RR 15 and Fractale 4 (the last one I'll do).

Well, I'm finally done with the volume. I hope that I will get faster at redoing volumes, because I'm doing 1.5 next month (half of Noririn v2, and the entirety of Lying Mii-kun).

Not to rip you guys off, but I had to order it from Amazon this time, because fujisan takes a while to ship the first issue. Since I ordered it along with this month's Young Ace (the fujisan shipment for that wasn't going to make it to my apartment in time before I left for the break), the cost is the total ($57.36) divided by 2 = $28.68. Fujisan shipments starting from next month should cost $17-18.

Shogaku Yonensei is actually a bad magazine to order from Amazon, since the manga portion is just a small booklet tucked into a regular-size magazine. In retrospect, I should've waited until books.com.tw had it available. After I ordered from Amazon, a cousin in Taiwan told me that having the magazine shipped to him (domestic shipping to convenience stores is free for many Taiwanese online retailers) then mailed to me might be cheaper, though I'm not sure that I want him to see this magazine. This is the kind of magazine his daughter would be reading.

I was going to wait until I release 7o3x, but I figured that would be too late. There's a total lunar eclipse tonight in North America. That means that the moon will appear red. If you live near railroad tracks, you can reenact that scene from Haibane Renmei.

Lying Mii-kun and Broken Maa-chan ch 4

The fifth and final chapter will be out on December 29th, but since the tank is out on January 7th, I'll wait till I get and scan the tank to translate chapter 5. I'll also redo the chapters with the tank raws, because this manga is quite easy to edit and clean, compared to harder ones like Mudazumo or 7o3x. Besides, there are two translation errors in chapter 3 that I would like to fix; one on the "doubt" thing and the other on the "mother" part.

Online Manga Downloader 0.0.1

Now that I know how to decrypt PCViewer images, I can release an early version of the downloader I've been working on. It can currently download all Yahoo! Comic and GanGan Online series; I'm working on Club Sunday.

Note that this is 0.0.1, which means that it's very immature. My badly-written code isn't documented and eats up exceptions quite frequently.

A design choice I made was for it to call home (that is, a file on my dropbox account) to look for updates. The reason was that it currently scrapes too many pages and files in order to find where the files are, so refreshing its list of manga takes several minutes. The file it downloads from dropbox already has the information processed for the client, provided that I remember to update it regularly. The list is actually a serialized object, which wasn't a very good idea in retrospect; I'll probably change it to YAML in the future.

Nevertheless, this program, in client mode, can still manually refresh, and it locally stores its list of manga. When I get to adding an preferences dialog, I'll add an option to disable checking for updates.

Also, the client and server are actually the same program. Just run the .jar with arguments "--server file" and it will generate the list at file "file".

A known bug with Yahoo! Comic is that it might not display the correct chapter number. For example, chapter 44 under Hyakko is actually chapter 40. The reason for this is that it only bothers to look at the "key1" parameter to figure out the chapter number, which is apparently incorrect for Hyakko and maybe a few other Yahoo! Comic series.

Running it requires Java 6. Compiling it requires JDK 6 (maybe JDK 5 works, idk) and SnakeYAML to parse the information files it has on series and magazines. This program is also licensed under new BSD, as ironic as it is for me to try to impose a license on something.

Oh, and to download the chapter, double-click it.

Online Manga Reverse Engineering Challenge Cracked!

Hahah, wow. I had never thought in my wildest dreams that someone would crack it that quickly. Well, "Nagato" sent me his entry last night. My day had been made.

Anyway, with Nagato's permission, I have been allowed to open source his program under the (new) BSD license. Usage is detailed in the archive. Decrypting is done in (POSIX-compliant) C, but the mass downloader scripts for both Yahoo! Comic and Club Sunday are both written in Python and require Beautiful Soup. Enjoy.

PCViewer Downloader (4SH)

I'll try to get my GUI-based downloader ready as soon as possible, though it makes me inadequate as a programmer to translate his code.

Online Manga Reverse Engineering Challenge

This is a slightly unorthodox post, but let me explain first.

Various publishers in Japan are starting to embrace online manga. You can see this with Square Enix's GanGan Online, on which Ryuushika Ryuushika and Fractale are serialized. Nevertheless, GanGan Online isn't the largest site. Yahoo! Comic is about twice as large, and Shogakukan's Club Sunday is a behemoth, with 282 series and counting.

The problem is this: unlike GanGan Online (which is already cracked easily), Yahoo! Comic and Club Sunday are both encrypted. That is, the images of their manga are encrypted and only decrypted through their special viewer. They happen to use the same viewer (PCViewer.swf), so that simplifies things.

My fear is that with the movement towards online manga, the Japanese raw providers might get too cozy. They might not be interested in pressing Print Screen 30 times to save a chapter that others can easily and freely read online. However, as a scanlator, I am interested in getting the source, so I want to be able to directly get the pages without the viewer. Besides, the Japanese are right; getting raws through Print Screen is tedious and boring.

Also, it's legally free manga, who wouldn't want it?

My challenge is to all of you well-versed with Flash and ActionScript: reverse engineer their viewer and decrypt their images. I want the code in Java, or easily translatable to Java, so I can integrate it with this downloader I've written for GanGan Online.

Because I'm not so rich (despite what my excessive spending might imply), and I have never requested something like this, the starting cash bounty is $30. My naive assumption is that there are at least a few people willing to do it just to be able download free manga. If that assumption gets proven wrong, then I'll start raising the price.

Here is more info on this, including some important links. Leave questions, information, comments, etc. in the comments, or send them to me through e-mail.

Given the sale numbers that this manga gets (50K volumes on the week when volume 5 was released), I would've guessed that it would go on longer. Whatever, it's been a fun run. I might pick up other Owada Hideki manga.

Anyways, I had predicted this and started ordering Kindai Mahjong issues from fujisan a month ago. I should be able to scan the last 2 or 3 chapters in January. Since fujisan doesn't allow anyone to cancel their subscription for the first 3 months, I'll end up with three extra issues, but whatever, they're $15 each. This isn't a totally veiled request to get donations, by the way.

I currently have no plans to translate the anthology (it's a bunch of non-sequitur 4-komas; you won't be missing much), but I'll scan it when I get it in January as well. The last volume should come out in May/June.

Route 225 raw scan

As a testament to my efficiency with requests, here is the raw to the one-volume manga that Yamada!AD/TRAP/M6 requested 7 months ago. I received this 2 months ago from Mike, and just had it scanned and processed. I will translate this in January; on the bright side, it will be relevant to the anime adaptation of Hourou Musuko, which is drawn by the same artist, Shimura Takako. Since it's adaptation of a novel, Route 225 doesn't have LGBT issues that she's known for writing, but it's interesting nonetheless.

Since her watercolors are so light, I might have to rescan the color pages again on my flatbed. For now, this will do.

Noririn volume 2 will also come out in January, so these two will be the main focus of January. Jiya, the other request that I haven't dropped (sorry to whoever wanted Sin & Punishment and Change 123), and Kindaichi Case Files will follow after them in late January and early February, assuming that other volumes don't pop up. Pokemon Special 38 should come out in late February if I've got the hang of the schedule. I can see the ending (of my debt)!

Now that I have my rotary trimmer of cutting doom, I can proceed to scan...the entire magazine.

Since there's 900 pages, an unfortunate combination of impatience and Murphy's Law made me accidentally rip some of the pages. The most notable one is Sugar Dark, which suffers from an unsightly hole right in the middle of all of the pages. I sincerely apologize to everyone who was following that, including the Japanese student in Korea. Despite my mistakes, the majority of the pages are alright.

The pages were resized down to 1600h and curved with a preset that works for most but not all of the series, so some might not look good. If you want to original raw, just contact me in the comments or through mail.

Ritz oneshot

Someone reminded me in the Mudazumo ch 33 dump thread that Owada had drawn a short oneshot about Saki author Kobayashi Ritz. I had downloaded it through Share, but I must have forgotten about it later. Since it's only 8 pages, here it is.

My most crucial final is over, so now I can focus on Mudazumo.

Well, that's not all. Princess Resurrection volume 13 and the OVA are out early. Someone uploaded the DVD onto Perfect Dark (file [DVDISO] [101209] 怪物王女 OAD 暗闇王女 (コミックス13巻 初回限定版) (iso+mds).rar DVDISO アニメ 光永康則 1,764,840,535 a08849d8adf4121946d609856845c23664729b9c835e59e3abbc4c6e3747e5ea), so I watched it. It's decent, but I guess I expected more. The story was written by Yasunori for this OVA, but it doesn't feel as good as some of the best manga chapters. The animation and direction are average. The only thing that I really liked was the music.

On the bright side, the train arc, starting with Princess Express will be adapted next, so that's worth another five-month wait. Meanwhile, I'll start preparing scripts for when volume 13 gets scanned sooner or later.

Mirai Nikki's pilot OVA also came out early, though no one has uploaded it yet. However, I heard that it's only 9 minutes long. Update: Oh, and the OP and music is by Yousei Teikoku.

Meanwhile, there's still no news on Mudazumo OVAs...

Pokemon Special vol 37 raw

Since unprocessed raws aren't very useful for reading, raws will be processed before released for public from now on. Unprocessed raws are only given if you contact me (and have valid reasons).

December 2010

Here's the tentative schedule for the rest of the year:

December 2010
Slot 1 Mudazumo Naki Kakikaku vol 5 (200 pages / 2 weeks = 100 pages / week) Pokemon Special vol 37 (200 pages / 2 weeks = 100 pages / week)
Slot 2
Slot 3 Ryuushika Ryuushika vol 1 extras (60 pages / 4 weeks = 15 pages / week)
Running Series Lying Mii-kun and Broken Maa-chan ch 4 (36 pages / month = 9 pages / week)
7o3x ch 2 (36 pages / month = 9 pages / week)
Pokemon Special BW (Shogaku Yonensei) ch 2 (20 pages / month = 5 pages / week)
Ryuushika Ryuushika ch 15 (12 pages / month = 3 pages / week)

Kaibutsu Oujo vol 13 scripts (30 pages / week)
Total Average Workload 171 pages / week 171 pages / week

For the first week, my pace for Mudazumo will be slow due to finals. After December 7th, I'll be able to burn through it quickly. Then I'll do the monthlies, and finally Pokemon Special. Kaibutsu Oujo scripts will resume after volume 13 and the first OVA releases, because chapter 56 has some seriously mind-blowing spoilers.

Kindaichi fans might have noticed that KCF has disappeared altogether. Unfortunately, since I wasn't able to finish it in November, it will be shelved for quite a while. KAW has offered their assistance, but even translating the script for the last 100 pages will take a lot of work, so I'll hold off until more opportune times.

The status of the joint projects with Animexis is unclear for now. I haven't gotten a message from him about a month, so I assume that he's incapacitated for now. The poor dude's father died, so cut him some slack. For now, I'll remove it from the schedule, but the scripts were fairly easy to translate anyways.

The schedule for January is unclear as well. Unless the Mudazumo anthology is fucking awesome, I won't translate it. I still got the 300-page Route 225 to do, so that will take up the month.

Fractale ch 3

Got delayed by /v/'s flavor of the month, 999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors. It's a point-and-click puzzle adventure game with the most anti-climatic yet awesome "final boss" puzzle ever.

Fractale's cast list and official English names came out, so "Krein" is now changed to "Clain" to conform with the anime's naming. When I was choosing names, I thought that "Krein" would fit the European atmosphere better than other candidates "Crain" and "Crane". On the bright side, I got "Phryne" right (because it's on Wikipedia), though I noticed that I misspelled that as "Phyrne" at least once.

Cyber Blue ch 31 (end)

I finally bring you the last chapter to Cyber Blue. What did you all think? I thought that these last few chapters salvaged the series as much as it could from the various problems it developed over volume 2 and 3. Of course, Tetsuo Hara's art was consistently great throughout the entire series.

And with this, we're finally caught up with the most recent Ryuushika Ryuushika; the next one will be up right before Christmas. I'll try to get volume 1 batch up by then so I can whitewash my terrible mistakes from the annals of hist-er, I mean, so you can enjoy the 60 or so extra pages.

Young Ace 2010-12 Raws Part 2

Now that I have my sleek and speedy scanner, I can proceed to burn through the rest of the stuff I wanted to scan from Young Ace 2010-12. I still haven't gotten my rotary trimmer yet, otherwise I could proceed to scan all 900 pages or so of this magazine in one or two hours.

These raws are leveled and resized through a macro; they aren't meant to be scanlation-grade raws, but preview releases. If you want to rely on me for raws, you had better contact me.

I did notice that the scans can get distorted sometimes, probably because it's not very high-quality paper.

J-Comi notes

Ken Akamatsu's J-Comi beta is now up, with all 14 volumes of Love Hina. It'll have more out-of-print manga in the future, so this a good sign.

Anyways, the manga are distributed in secured PDF files. Since they even disabled printing, it took me a while to rip the images automatically, but it's doable with some PDF converters. The HQ PDF files are at 827x1120, and the LQ PDF files are at 420x595. There are some ads at the beginning, middle and end of the volume, but it's fairly unobtrusive.

I'll be following this with interest.

Noririn ch 12

Well, that concludes all of the Noririn chapters I have. It's around chapter 18 or 19 in Evening, but since no one scans it anymore, I can't catch up until volume 2 comes out sooner or later.

Pokemon Special vol 9

After far too many troubles and delays, the Pokemon Special Restoration Project is proud to release its first volume, volume 9. It's the Chuang Yi translation copied onto Japanese raws, so it's properly scanned and reads right-to-left.

Mudazumo Naki Kaikaku 5 raws; ScanSnap S1500: raws, raws everywhere

I finally got the latest Mudazumo. It's as crazy as the spoiler pics and summaries I've been reading, so I can't wait to finish these last five chapters of Cyber Blue, the last available chapter raw of Noririn, the next 50-page Fractale chapter, and the three Ryuushika chapters...Damn, it'll take a while. Feel free to spoil yourselves in the meanwhile.

In retrospect, I might have to rescan the cover on a flatbed later, but all grayscale pages are fine.

I also got a new scanner, the Fujitsu ScanSnap S1500. It was more or less designed to be marketed to the new jisui (self-scan) movement in Japan, which is all about scanning books for self-viewing. Here's a demo:

I got this volume scanned in record time, so I'm sure that I can use the extra time to pay back my crippling debt in the future if I keep spending my savings like this.
