Cyborg 009 and Silent Hill references this chapter. I guess those are the best choices for a psychic baby and his female caregiver who are being chased by a creepy faceless monster.

I accidentally edited it at a higher resolution (3600px high instead of 2600px high), so the PSDs are kinda bloated. Too lazy to run a batch to resize them.

Getenrou HQ raw

First, I'd like to make one thing clear. There are at least two groups who have contacted me about this (Kotonoha and Suimasen). I will be a neutral raw provider to any group.

Notes about the raws:
  1. The cover has been rotated, cropped, and merged, but not cleaned. Cover and inside cover dpi is 600.
  2. Page 001a is actually a combination of a translucent overlay page with the Groucho classes and the page underneath.
  3. All of the other pages are straight from my scanner with no modifications. The dpi is 400. The file names are aligned with the actual page numbers.
Finally, this is just my opinion, but I recommend all groups to skim over the analysis from various Japanese blog posts, like this one. In particular, take note of the sound effect on page 216.

Pokemon Special BW ch 14

As you may or may not know, Sho4 is ending in two issues, so that puts us in an awkward spot. I've taken the liberty of drawing up a transitional "contract."

If you vote to not continue paying for monthly Pokemon Special...

I won't continue to import any more magazine issues containing Pokemon Special after Sho4 ends. I'll import the last two issues of Sho4 regardless of the balance. However, I'd appreciate it if you guys clear the balance instead of leaving me $54 poorer.

If you vote to continue paying for Pokemon Special...

You'll need to finish paying for the Sho4 issues; I need about $54 for the current debt and the cost of the last two issues.

Then this is where it gets tricky. The other magazines that Pokemon Special is serialized in are the monthly CoroCoro Ichiban and the irregular (usually bimonthly) Pokemon Fan. I have two choices:
  1. Try to set up subscriptions through Kinokuniya: I don't know if they import these magazines, but if they do, it's probably going to be $140/year for CoroCoro Ichiban (no idea what the cost for PF is). I prefer to get at least half the money in advance from you guys, though.

  2. Import through Amazon + transfer service: From my estimates, both magazines probably takes $30/issue to import and $40 together. What I would do is import two issues of CCI and one issue of PF together to lower the shipping costs. Doing things that way would probably cost $50-60 every two months, which is better than the current set up with Sho4.
The ball is in your court, donators.

Online Manga Downloader 0.1.6

Update: CrochetTime for Voyager store may be broken because Voyager store is changing their servers, apparently.

Thanks to Spiritovod's meticulous bug-catching, I think we've caught and fixed most of the bugs. Here are the changes other than bug fixes:
  • Revamped GUI: The main downloader window is now combined with the examples frame. In Manual mode, the tab you're on when you press the Download button is the handler that the downloader uses. For examples, if I'm on the Shogakukan tab, the downloader will use the Shogakukan tab.

  • Three new handlers: Comic Rush, Grand Jump/Monthly Heros, and Web Young Jump.

  • Resume function: It picks up from the first file that it hasn't downloaded, not the first file of the whole item.

  • General code restructuring: Most net code has been moved to use Jsoup instead of java.net.
However, there are two known bugs:
  • NicoNico E-books Hour Bug: NicoNico E-books has some really large files and long items, so it may take more than an hour to finish downloading it. Unfortunately, the NicoNico login also seems to expire in a hour.

  • Connection Abort Bug: It doesn't detect aborted connections. For example, Yahoo Bookstore has some files larger than 1MB. If your connection is slow and under stress, OMD's connection may be interrupted. OMD will spit out a partial file in that case.
Right now, both can be "fixed" through the resume function. If you encounter the first bug, just make it download again and it will pick up from where it left off. For the second bug, delete the partially download files and try again.

Someone Should Fucking Pick This Up, But That Someone Isn't Me, Part 1: Getenrou

So I was thinking about how decide what manga to pick up, and came to the conclusion that it's mostly random. I mean, I do like the series I scanlate, but when it comes between two equally matched series, the deciding factor can be quite strange. For example, back in February, I was thinking about picking up Aku no Hana (before the good part ended around chapter 17 or so), but someone else picked it up, so I decided that it was probably time for me to catch up on Nanika. Then, back in May, I was deciding between Arpeggio of Blue Steel and Kiba no Tabishounin. Arpeggio eventually won out due to its lower editing cost and slower publishing speed. I eventually recommended it to some guys on /a/, who I believe were the guys who picked it up.

The point is, sometimes I pick up or don't pick up stuff due to reasons completely irrelevant to the quality of the manga itself. I kinda feel bad for them, so I want to lay them to rest or give them a new life elsewhere with a new blog series: "Someone Should Fucking Pick This Up, But That Someone Isn't Me." We start with a manga that's so unknown to the English community that its MU entry doesn't even link to the author.

Part 1: Getenrou

WTF Is This: It's a one-volume mystery manga by the author of Soredemo Machi ga Mawatteiru. It starts off with episodic mysteries that don't seem connected at all, but it weaves all of together in impressively coherent manner in the end. The mysteries themselves are pretty clever for their length.

Though not apparent in some of the earlier mysteries, the overarching story is about androids. In fact, it's very similar to the UN-GO arc about RAIs. The cast of the story is colorful and quite likable. After watching Soredemo and reading this, I think this is one of the author's strong points.

Why I Didn't Pick It Up: The ending. There's nothing objectively bad about it, but it did something that I personally deem unacceptable: killing off my favorite character. Of course, this is completely subjective.

Why You Should Pick This Up: It's a fairly solid volume that kept me reading; not a single chapter was dull. If you like good mystery, you'll like this.

Also, it has quite possibly the best Amazon reviews ever.

Where You Can Get Raws: Just Google. I can scan if you want better quality.

Comic Hoshi Shin'ichi ch 15 (Execution)

I heard that this was one of the top-rated stories, and I can see why. My favorites are still "The Gate to Space" and "Fate" (later in the volume), though.

Online Manga Downloader 0.1.5

Changes:
  • Removed a line of code that made the downloader quit after it successfully finished downloading a chapter. I put it there for debugging, and forgot to take it out. Oops.

  • Added support for NicoNico EBooks with DRM. AFAIK, it's for stuff that are linked with BookWalker. Note that in order to download chapter that are linked with BookWalker, you need to make a BookWalker account and link it with your NicoNico account. Just login and read that chapter, and NicoNico will show you how to do it.

  • Added support for Yahoo Bookstore. It uses an offline reader instead of a flash viewer like PCViewer/DOR. Fortunately for me, the reader was written in C#, making it possible for me to decompile and read the code. Unfortunately, I haven't bought anything from this, so I haven't implemented downloading stuff the user has already bought.

  • Added automatic detection. It just tries all of the handlers, and asks for necessary information for Shogakukan and the Nico handlers if it comes to them.

  • Saves your last download directory in preferences now.

  • General code cleaning. I fixed some possible race conditions, though I never detected any before I implemented the auto-detect.

Arpeggio of Blue Steel drama CD: retraction

I just got the instructions for the Special "Giveaway." It turns out that you need to use a Japan Post service (in conjunction with a Japan Post Bank account) only available in physical Japan Post offices, so it's impossible to do internationally. Sorry for those who have already sent theirs in.

The drama CD and the booklet comes out in late March 2012. I'm sure that at least the drama CD will get uploaded, but if you want physical copies, people will probably sell them on Yahoo Auctions. Hoshi no Samidare's giveaways are still being sold on Yahoo Auctions after 2 years, so I'm sure that this one will as well.

Random Statistics

So this downtime is starting to bore me, because it's actually making me productive. I decided to run a Photoshop script to collect some stats. Namely, the total character count of all of the bubbles of each volume. The character count of redo volumes counts all of the pages of the volumes. Also, I didn't collect statistics on volumes for which I don't have sources (lost Cyber Blue 1 and 2 and Hanako 3's sources) and volumes that I didn't or haven't scanlate from cover to cover.

A few things to note:
  • Pokemon Special has surprisingly high character count. I expected it to have around 40K/volume.
  • Kindaichi's character count is 2.5 times the average. That's why I'm hesitant to pick up another volume.
  • However, even Kindaichi's character count doesn't come close to the character count of light novel translations. For example, Tora Dora volume 1's character count is around 276,000, and that's fairly low compared to the others, such as Kizumotogatari's 500,000 characters.
Any other statistic I should collect? Line and word count will probably tell the same story, so I'll refrain from doing that.

Online Manga Downloader 0.1.4

Changes:
  • Added support for a third NicoNico viewer: NicoNico E-Books. At this rate, I'll probably have to add an auto-detection feature, though the prerequisites of NicoNico E-Books, NicoNico User-published, and Shogakukan might get in the way.
  • Renamed "Club Sunday" to "Shogakukan", since it's used on many Shogakukan sites and not just Club Sunday.
  • Changed most XML parsing from DOM to SAX.
  • Tries to use the native look and feel.
As usual, source is here. Any bug reports, comments and suggestions are welcome. The big migration from DOM to SAX may have produced some bugs that I've not caught.

Notification: Raw Problems

Several things have happened to raw acquisition for several series recently. To make a long story short:
  • Pokemon Special BW: Fujisan is raising the shipping price by about $6. I'll look into alternative methods like Amazon + forwarding service, but for the next few months, Sho4 will cost about $25.
  • Nanika Mochigatte masu ka: The Chinese group Beast Knights' scanner is facing financial difficulties, so the next chapter (to be released in one week) will be delayed.
  • Arpeggio of Blue Steel: Also due to the Beast Knights' problems, the chapter scan quality will go from some of the best magazine raws I've ever used to eye-cancer quality like my releases for chapter 25 and 26.
I'll try to solve these problems as soon as I can.

The volume is finally here. I didn't have the chance to scan the entire volume yet, so I only have raws for this chapter. I'll try to get everything scanned soon.

I'm allergic to TL notes, so I only put this in as a note in the PSD, but the phrase "Stomach's Howl" is a term I put in for "Protection of an Empty Stomach" (literally "Protection by Your Stomach Bug," wherein "Stomach Bug" is an idiom from "empty stomach"). Yuu explains it in the next chapter.

  • The old NicoNico downloader has been renamed to "NicoNico User-published"
  • Added support for PocoPoco.
  • Added a log that gives extensive debug information. If you have an issue, you can help me help you faster by taking the log and posting it on PasteBin.
  • Corrected Actibook for DokiDoki, Shodensha, Tsubomi and sites like them. It should detect the right variant of Actibook now.

Ben-to Zero 1

Here's the story behind this: before the season started, I looked up this series because I was curious. I found out that it had a prequel manga, but I couldn't find any raws, or even any photos of it. Then, yesterday, I decided to implement the downloader for the other NicoNico manga viewer. I noticed that the first issue of SDMP, the magazine for this, was released on Nico on the same day, so I decided to pick it up because I like the anime so far (and it's only one volume).

Anyway, the LN illustrator is drawing this manga. The editing department and the LN illustrator should get some sort award for that, because it's frustrating to see manga publishers use their adaptation deals to test new artists (see: Fractale).

  2. One-volume manga - I was thinking that I would have to wait one more week to get raws for this, but I found the first chapter by a strange coincidence today.
  3. Comic Hoshi Shin'ichi - I've been neglecting this, but I will still uphold my promise of finishing this by the end of this year
  4. Kaibutsu Oujo - I'll get to one or two chapters within catching up by the end of the year.
  5. Arpeggio of Blue Steel vol 4 redo - The editing is so easy that it'll only take 2-3 days at most. Will squeeze in sometime.
  6. Arpeggio of Blue Steel Drama CD - The CDs aren't that expensive ($15), but buying requires mailing in a special card and money in yen, using a transfer service, etc. I'll try to get it in a timely manner.
Of course, I'll mix things up (especially 2, 3, and 4) so I don't overindulge or neglect them. Regular stuff will come at their regular times. Pokemon Special and Noririn aren't going to release their next volumes until the end of December or next year. The next Mudazumo volume will probably come out in February.
