Jiya ch 1

I remember that when I accepted this request last October, the requester said that it was like early Christmas. Well, uh, Merry Christmas, I guess.

Anyways, this series is a three-chapter mini series (three-shot?) written by the famous Akira Toriyama and drawn by the not-so-famous Masakazu Katsura (I"s, Zetman). The premise reminds me of Birdy, though half of the enjoyment I get from Birdy is the character herself, so this isn't really an accurate summary. Just read and find out.

"Scanbooru"

My previous statement about how I was going to approach Oriko Magica was kinda vague. I'll expand on it in this post.

Problems:
  • Oriko Magica is a 150-page spoiler bomb. Excuse me, it's a series of 150-page spoiler bombs, one per month. Since the Madoka manga stuck to the anime, it wasn't very interesting (at least to me) besides the explicit detail in the Charlotte scene.

Due to its explosive potential, this is a manga that needs to be translated yesterday, and I don't usually say that. I'm sure that a lot of other people are dying to work on it as well, considering that a few anons (including DKThias) churned out Madoka vol 2 in a few days.

  • Madoka vol 2 was an example of a scanlation effort on /a/ done right. Nevertheless, a few days ago, I saw it go wrong. A couple of anons were working on the Lotte's Toy manga, much to the chagrin of Facepalm Scans. However, someone else pointed out that the editor was putting in the text in the wrong bubbles. The anons stopped, presumably embarrassed.

I can't really blame them, since chan-style image boards aren't really made for scanlation. During the little experience I had of scanlating on /a/ (while using someone else's translation), I found that it's easy to lose track, even with scripts like backwash.
Proposed Solution:
  • As I've said, someone suggested by e-mail that I should develop some sort of soft translation software. I probably misconstrued what he meant, but in any case, I dismissed the idea at the time.

  • I occasionally visited the Madoka general to see what's up, and maybe help translate a few things, like those few magazine scans that talked about film theory in Madoka a few weeks ago. I would frequently see the anon who is of purportedly French origin (named "Some french anon") editing Madoka pics and doujins. One time, I noticed that he was asking for sound effects translations, so I pointed him to the motherlode of sfx translations. He said something to the effect of "well, that's not useful for me, since I can't read it". I then realized that he had been editing all of these pictures with translations from Danbooru and some anons in the general thread. He can't even read Hiragana or Katakana, and yet he produces fairly good edits.

I haven't been keep up with it (there's probably an image pack on the wiki), but he must have edited hundreds of images without even so much as speaking with the translators who put up the translations on Danbooru. That's the kind of efficiency that Oriko Magica needs.

  • My proposition is that we also use a Danbooru-style image board for the scanlation of Oriko Magica. I don't know if anyone has ever attempted a full-blown scanlation effort like this. Nevertheless, I want to give this a try.

The basic procedure is like this:

Note that the editing is still done offline with Photoshop (or whatever). The image board is just a mode of collaboration, and is not meant to be a full scanlation suite.

The diagram collapses many jobs into a few (and forgets QC, just like me). It's presumed that the image gets downloaded, worked on, and re-uploaded by many people doing different jobs. The point of this solution is to try to make the scanlation as parallel as possible; you can think of this as an assembly line of sorts.

One feature of Danbooru-style image boards that will be abused is tags, because it is important to keep track of which pages are at which stage.

  • Obviously, we can't use THE Danbooru for this. Danbooru's code is open source, but it requires Ruby on Rails and all of that jazz. I tried gelbooru 0.1.* last time, but it was buggy for me. The last choice left is...Shimmie, which I didn't even know about until I read the Wikipedia article on image boards. Back then, I thought that there wasn't a photo note extension for Shimmie, so I implemented one. However, right after that, I noticed that someone was indeed developing one. Nevertheless, I can't get it to work, so I'm using my implementation in the meanwhile.

It works fine so far, though there might be a few injection attack vulnerabilities here and there, or something like that. Shimmie is surprisingly extensible, and it even comes with a Danbooru skin.

Advantages:
  • Parallel scanlation: Ideally, instead of having to wait for other team members for everything, the translating, cleaning, typesetting and editing will all happen at the same time, so the required time is shorter than their combined time.

  • No group structure required: Members of an orchestra aren't required to know each other. They're just required to come to the rehearsals and the performances and perform their parts together. Just like how the musicians can do their parts from their scores, I trust that given a scene like the screenshot above, editors/cleaners/typesetters would know what to do.

  • No messing up the order of the bubbles: The translated text is right on the bubble, man!

  • Doubles as an online reader: A bonus of this idea is that once it's finished, it can be put under a tag or a pool, and readers can be pointed to that pool if they prefer to read online (hey, it's better than having them read it online elsewhere). Moreover, it doesn't even have to be finished; readers can see the manga being scanlated in real time. Scanlating on chan-style image boards also has this benefit, but with photo notes, even if translation has finished but not editing, readers can easily read the translations, just like on Danbooru.
Disadvantages:
  • Inconsistency: There exists a saying: "too many chefs ruin the broth". Given the translation wars that I've seen happen in the general threads, I have a bad omen about this. For the record, I use "magical girl" purely because the incorrect Latin bugs me, but if the majority overwhelmingly votes for "puella magi", I'll go with that. If we have an even split, everyone will just do what they want. I would rather have an inconsistent translation than no translation at all.

Furthermore, font family, styling and sizes will have to be agreed on beforehand. The standard dialog font will probably be AnimeAce BB 2.0, because that's what all of cool kids are using.

  • Requires Many People: I'm afraid that I'm just talking to myself and that no one will participate in this. In any case, I'll go ahead with this plan even if no one comes.
Anyways, after I translate 7o3x ch 6 and the next Ryuushika chapter, I'm going to test it with Jiya in private, fix anything that pops up, and probably do it in public with Cat Diary.

Change of Schedule: Oriko Magica, Part 2

Update (April 28th, 2011): The official summary says that Oriko volume 2 is the last one, so everything will be back to normal in July.

Oriko vol 2 was announced. It looks like it's coming out at the usual rate of a volume per month. Anyways, the cover is...interesting.

Rest of April (for once, I'm actually ahead of schedule!):
  1. 7o3x
  2. Kazumi (the masked cat is "Juubey". I'm not kidding)
  3. Ryuushika
  4. Jiya
May:
  1. Jiya
  2. Cat Diary
  3. Oriko vol 1 (highest priority)
  4. Cat Diary
  5. Pokemon Special BW
  6. 7o3x
  7. Kazumi
  8. Ryuushika
  9. XXXXXXX XX XXXX XXXXX vol 1
June:
  1. XXXXXXX XX XXXX XXXXX vol 1
  2. Oriko vol 2 (highest priority)
  3. Pokemon Special vol 39? Still not announced yet.
  4. Pokemon Special BW
  5. 7o3x
  6. Kazumi
  7. Ryuushika
The rhythm will go on, as long as Oriko is still ongoing. The exact order will change, and not just because this schedule is dependent on the unfortunately false theory that Noririn and Pokemon Special will absolutely not release volumes in this time frame.

FTH said that they're going to release Kaibutsu Oujo monthly now to prevent long gaps, so I will only translate every month now.

Pokemon Special BW ch 06

You guys are lucky that I'm a cheap pirating bastard and that the current crack for Portal 2 isn't very stable for me.

It would be unfair for me to change the agreement halfway through, so the magazine importation part of Pokemon Special will remain unchanged until further notice. That said, it doesn't seem to help at all. If you would recall, the original agreement was that I would keep importing as long as the balance is greater than -$20, and the current balance is 19.20, which will last for three more issues, assuming that prices don't go up.

Mudazumo Naki Kaikaku ch 45; vol 6 batch (includes ch 46v2-48v2) [END...?]

Update: I forgot how difficult it is to discern case from WildWords font (and that Youtube video IDs were case-sensitive), so here's the link to the song in the last chapter again.

I had a hard time deciding whether or not I wanted to call this the end of the series. However, since everyone seems to be calling volume 6 the last volume, I'll go along with it. It really depends on what the sequel/continuation is called.

This is the end of an era for me, since Mudazumo was the series that got me into scanlation in the first place. I will definitely give the sequel/continuation a try whenever it comes out. There's no info on it right now except for the preview in the very back of the volume.

Chapters 46-48 were redone from volume raws. If you haven't noticed yet, chapter 47 and 48 from the magazine scans were merged to form chapter 47 and chapter 49 was moved to chapter 48. Anyways, just don't get confused about the numbering.

The bounty on the tapestry is always open (of course, only for the first person who answers the offer). I feel that my work on this series is incomplete until I have finally merged the damn thing.

Quick Poll on 7o3x

The first volume of 7o3x is going to come out in two weeks on May 2nd. Kadokawa still hasn't released information on the volume, such as the number of pages, but there's a chance that chapter 5 might be on it too. Chapter 1-4 is about 180 pages together, which is on the lower bounds of tank length. On the other hand, chapter 1-5 is 220 pages, which is higher than average.

Given how difficult editing this series is, I will not redo every single page. Nevertheless, I will scanlate new pages, redo spreads and important pages, and fix styling and translation decisions (such as using WW Italics for pretty much everything, and my terms for grade levels).

Now, here is the question: should I do chapter 5 from the magazine scans, or from the volume scans? They're mutually exclusive.

Here's the summary of consequences:
  1. I choose to translate chapter 5 from magazine scans in about a week:
    • I will translate chapter 6 (from magazine scans) right after that.
    • I will not redo from the volume scans.
    • I will delay buying volume 1 a bit so I can ship the new series along with it (well, technically, it has been out for a long time now, but being the paranoid fool that I am, so I don't want to import it if someone picks it up before I can pick it up).
  2. I choose to translate chapter 5 from volume scans as soon as the volume arrives:
    • Chances are that chapter 5 won't get preempted by Oriko Magica, but chapter 6 will. (You can also vote to make me translate chapter 6 before chapter 5)
    • Chapter 5 will be in higher quality.
    • I will upload volume 1 scans sooner, but volume 1 redo will still get delayed by Oriko Magica.
Your choices are:
  1. Just do chapter 5 from magazine scans.
  2. Wait until Kadokawa releases info on volume 1, then decide on what to do.
Choose wisely.

Mudazumo Final Rising Sun Tapestry

I tried merging chapter 48 (actually chapter 47.5 now) again...and the damn thing still won't merge completely. Therefore, I'll have no choice but to ask if someone could buy and scan the tapestry above, which costs 2980 yen (US$35). I think it went on sale in Gamers at Akihabara when volume 6 was released a few weeks ago. If it sold out or something, it'll be back by May 4th.

I'm willing to pay US$60 (5015 yen) through PayPal for someone to buy the tapestry AND scan it. I'll walk you through how I want you to scan it, don't worry. Just have a scanner that can handle 300-350 dpi. If you can only buy it, then we'll have to negotiate more on shipping.

Chapter 41 should be out in several hours.

Now that they're making OVAs, I guess that Yasunori will start making longer arcs so there is material to adapt. For example, this arc spans three chapters, and feels like it could be split into two arcs. Nevertheless, I can't wait until Tatsunoko adapts the current arc (chapter 67 and on).

Retirement Plan

I usually get a ton of visits when I release the volume, so I figure that I should announce it now. As you all know, the Pokemon games and thus this manga are endless. In fact, it just entered the top 100 longest running manga ever by volume (if someone fixes its volume count in that article). Thus, I will eventually have to drop this manga, just because there's no end to it.

There are two plans right now for the eventual drop of Pokemon Special.

Plan A:
  1. Volumes 39-42: Normal
  2. Volumes 43-46: Scanning and translating only; no editing
  3. Volumes 47-50: Scanning only
  4. Drop
Plan B:
  1. Volumes 39-44: Normal
  2. Volumes 45-50: Scanning only
  3. Drop
With the Pokemon Special Restoration Project, one of my goals was to create a group that would succeed me, but that didn't go so well, mostly because I sucked at managing. I still have my doubts and reservations about DGS, so I'm hesitant to work with them. However, in these plans, none of those factors really matter: whether or not there is a successor, I will drop it when the time comes. I am not kidding.

Well, since the volume 43 comes out next June, this is still far in the future, but I thought that I would announce it now.

Other manga don't really have such a plan right now. 7o3x is slightly problematic because it looks like it's going to be fairly long, and editing/cleaning it is a pain. Even then, since they're less time-consuming, so the default plan is to keep translating them until they finish, especially for joint projects.

I feel slightly embarrassed to announce this just after I accepted a request to pick up a running monthly manga that has about 20 chapters out, but Pokemon Special is just that problematic. I've come to the realization that I unintentionally built a shaky monopoly on this manga that even dominates the translation groups of other languages and depends on just one person. I wanted to build a more sustainable group that handle the translation of this manga to the very end, but having failed that, I can only eventually phase out and hope that someone better will fill the vacuum.

Change of Schedule: Oriko Magica

Correction: The release date for Oriko vol 1 is now confirmed to be May 12th.

I've heard rumors about Madoka vol 3 and Oriko vol 1 coming out on April 28, which seems likely now that the anime is finally finishing up on April 21 (MBS, TBS) and 24 (CBC). The statements below are still effective if the date is different.

I'll be working on Oriko with any and all anons (and others) who want to collaborate like what those anons did for Madoka vol 2. Due to its spoilertastic nature, Oriko will preempt everything and anything on my schedule. I'll probably be done with Mudazumo and everything else on my April schedule by then, so it'll delay Jiya and Cat Diary.

I might try something new for this project. Someone had once suggested that I should develop a danbooru-like program for scanlation. I still think that that doesn't work because typesetting is far too complex for a program like that, but there was a good idea in that. Danbooru-like image boards are well suited for parallel scanlation efforts. The translators can put the translations on notes over the relevant bubbles, the proofreader/TLC can change it, and the cleaners/editors/typesetters can take the raw, process it, and upload the cleaned/edited(/typesetted?) versions.

Anyways, the /a/nons who did Madoka vol 2 had seen me attempt it once, but I had problems with gelbooru. Since it's dependent on a ton of stuff like RoR, Danbooru is too complex to set up (well, it would be simpler if I were to run my own Debian-based server), so I'm going to try Shimmie this time around. It doesn't support notes, but it does have a pretty cool extension API, so I guess it's time for me to brush up on my PHP/MySQL.

In case this fails, I'll just do this the normal way and find the thread on /a/.

Demon 72 ch 1

This is the triple joint with Animexis and FTH that I had mentioned a while ago. It's another supernatural action manga by Mitsunaga Yasunori, the author of Kaibutsu Oujo, but a relatively new artist is drawing it. Since I've only seen one chapter, my impression may not be 100% accurate, but it feels like a genderbent Hellsing so far. We'll see.

Head over to For The Halibut to check the first chapter out.

It appears that I was wrong in saying that Houzuki was moving to Nano Ace. It's getting a spin-off there. Upotte did get moved, but the author is starting another manga in YA.

Pokemon Special BW ch 06 raw, Reburst ch 01-04 raws (from Club Sunday)

No missing pages this time, I promise.

I'll get around to this after Mudazumo. By the way, the balance is now $9.20.

Anyways, it appears Pokemon Fronti-...excuse me, Pokemon Reburst ended after 5 chapters. I don't think they even made enough pages for a 200-page volume. According to a recent interview that the chief editor of Shounen Sunday had with Natalie.mu, it "had been in the works since 3 years ago".

Update: Damn, I should have read on. "Sorry, the above image is a hoax." (すみません、上の画像はウソです。)

I just noticed that chapters 1 through 4 were all on Club Sunday in one form or another. All of those raws were uploaded onto scan sites before, but in case you're all too lazy to clean them, here are perfect raws from Club Sunday.

I have no plans at all to translate this manga.

Nanika Mochigatte Masu ka ch 7

I was actually incorrect in saying that there's 8 chapters out. It turns that this wasn't in good! Afternoon #15, released in March. We're now fully caught up. Chapter 8 should come out next month.

April 2011

I think that I should at least give a passing mention to my plans this month.

As for my independent work, the order will go like this:
  1. Nanika ch 7
  2. Pokemon Special ch 420-422
  3. Mudazumo Naki Kaikaku ch 41-45 (along with 46-49 redo)
  4. Pokemon Special BW ch 6 (raw scan will come tomorrow)
  5. 7o3x ch 5-6
Meanwhile, Kaibutsu Oujo vol 14 (ch 60-63) will be translated. I think the other project with Animexis will start moving along as well.

Young Ace scans was delayed because I left for vacation right before the issue arrived, and I haven't found the time to scan all of it yet. I've scanned about 600 pages, so I'll probably finish tomorrow or the next day.

If you're wondering about Pokemon Special RS Wide, it turns out that bk1 doesn't sell it, so I'll buy it in June from Amazon (or yes-asia) after all three volumes come out. It might be cheaper to order from Amazon anyways, since the volumes might be considerably heavy.

Anyways, this was a massive scheduling mistake on my end. I can't blame this on any natural disasters if I wanted to. The explanation is just that the four series that have the highest priority happened to release together (well, I guess it's true that I made things worse by throwing Nanika in there). I can only imagine the mayhem that would happen if Oriko Magica wasn't delayed.

Well, since Pokemon Special volume 39 hasn't been announced yet, I might finally be free in May after I finish Jiya. I'm most likely going to pick up one of the few short series that I have been looking at.
  • Itou Junji's Cat Diary: It's an one-volume comedy manga, but Junji Itou still draws it with his horror manga style, which makes it unexpectedly funny.
  • Comic Hoshi Shin'ichi: A two-volume anthology of short stories written by SF writer Shin'ichi Hoshi, and drawn by artists like Kitoh (again), Takako Shimura (again), etc.
  • Fairytale Labyrinth/Douwa Meikyuu: Two-volume adaptation of short stories by Mimei Ogawa, the Japanese Hans Christian Andersen. I'm a bit disappointed with this because it seems that the stories have been changed quite a bit.
  • A two-chapter series, but I haven't received it yet.
Since they're short, I'm willing to cooperate, recruit, or joint with anyone competent on any of these series. However, keep in mind that I might have to take a month or more to get around to them.

That's all for now.

Kaibutsu Oujo ch 60 script

No one has uploaded volume 14 scans, so FTH has bought their own copy. On the subject of raws, I stopped uploading chapter raws a while ago out of sheer laziness. If you can use Perfect Dark, someone uploads the entire Shounen Sirius magazine on to PD every month with a few days of release, so search for "少年シリウス".

Anyways, I think I've said this a while back, but Duken's character design (chapter 68 spoilers: it's actually one of his android clones. After reading this chapter again, it seems that Hime already knew) is entirely copied from inspired by Casshern. If you haven't watch Neo-Human Casshern (or the 2004 movie, or Casshern Sins), you might want to think about doing so. Shit hits the fan on chapter 67, and shit gets accelerated 20x through a Dyson fan on chapter 68.

Pokemon Special ch 419

All this talk about financial management (and my obsessive longing for Moshidora) has made me think about a different kind of management. What if a Pokemon trainer read Drucker's "Management"? Would it improve his or her skills, and by how much? Questions like this keep me up at night.
