Okay, Be Honest

Which one of these sounds more interesting?

Manga A:
  • Inspired by a novel written in 1898.
  • Set in the 1950s.
  • About a series of murders associated with a haunted tower.

  • Demographics: seinen
  • Genres: mystery, horror
  • Art by the artist
Manga B:
  • Written by an acclaimed (anime) writer.
  • About a girl who explores a vast, seemingly endless network of tunnels.
  • If you know what I'm talking about (PV just came out, by the way), be aware that this is a spin-off of the main work and not the main work itself.
  • No, it's not related to TTGL at all.

  • Demographics: seinen
  • Genres: unknown, but most likely adventure, mystery, sci-fi
  • Art by the artist

  2. Why does this post sound, to me, biased in the favor of manga B? Is it because of the adjectives used? Btw is it guren lagaan 2?

No, it's not related to TTGL at all.

  7. Fuck, both sound great. Manga A because it sounds like it has a definite ending, even though a spinoff. I would choose Manga B, but it sounds like it could drag on. But the idea of exploration is also interesting; I wouldn't mind if either (or hell, both) won.

  8. I vote for Manga A purely for the artstyle. Now, don't get me wrong, both examples of the art are beautiful, but A's style appeals to me more.

  9. Manga A.
Both artwork are interesting, but dunno why B's artwork give a scent of Slice of Life genre, and usually I got bored read that. So I prefer something that (maybe) give adrenaline? Kukuku, and 1950's as setting looks interesting... btw, 1950s in western-style or eastern-style?

  10. Based entirely on art style and your short bullet points, I have to say I prefer B, but recommend you to do A (and common consensus seems to prefer A).

With A, is the story western or eastern? Is the story setting western or eastern? The area it's set in seems far more limited than B due to being set, I'd imagine, nigh wholly in the tower. Further, mysteries are a hell of a story to properly pace, set the atmosphere for and also be convoluted enough to interest without being so convoluted it wrecks suspension of disbelief.

Its strength lies in its constraints, however, and it seems unlikely that the story will drag on allowing you to move on to other projects upon completion.

Story B on the other hand has the opposite problem. It lacks constraints and can potentially have the story drag on. If it's coming out at the same time as an anime, it seems more like a sudden grab at manga sales than a fully self-contained story. Also there's the question of how quickly the unknown world can be fleshed out and the plot setup before readers get bored with it.

Based purely on the artist's other works, it appears to be a more whimsical, slice of life story than anything. Perhaps with some drama and coming of age, but primarily a feast for the eyes. A way to fashion a world, but not a powerful story in its own right.

Personally, I prefer B. But I just can't see it as being *amazing* at the moment so I'd have to recommend A for you to do. At least with the limited in material manga A, even if it's underwhelming, you'll know that, one day, the mystery will have to end.

    1. The novel that inspired manga A was written in the West, though the manga takes place in 1950s Japan. I haven't read the novel nor watched its silent film, so I have no idea how much different it is.

  11. not too fond of sci-fi so i recommend a

  12. I found Manga A and it's looks fine, maybe even interesting.
On other hand, I'm not sure about Manga B, but art of the author is gorgeous.

Manga B, since I'm kinda bored of poor japanese mystery.

  16. Is not all toi8's stuff full-colored? At least that title from Gelatin. It's just you can't compare such mangas at all... :\

  17. Manga B for me, I don't like the horror genre that much whereas the other looks like SF whith steampunk art and I like that a lot.

  18. I guess, you won't be doing both, eh?

    Anyway, voted A then.

  19. Voted B, I'm not into the horror stuff, underground sci-fi adventures for the win, also love the art of this one

  20. I've had enough Horror this Anime season. Manga B for me, Sci-fi is always good. :D

  21. I can't believe Manga A is losing.....
    There goes my reference

  22. Manga B sounds like a riskier, more out there project that could either flop or be amazing, but it's my choice anyway. The description in some ways actually brings to mind BLAME!, although undoubtedly much lighter in tone. The art looks potentially both solid and also very imaginative, which is important for a "big world" type of series. There has been a LOT of solid "mystery/horror" type stuff in the last few years, I don't think it's played out but it also doesn't feel as fresh to me either, so if we have to choose between the two I lean towards taking a chance on the crazy sandbox.

  23. They both sound interesting but i choose Manga A.

  24. Art by A seems well good for a seinen manga. Art by B also looks good too. Since I believe you won't do both and I prefer horror to adventure, I vote for A.

    1. Not to accuse anyone, but it's possible to spoof comments as well. Proxies are not even necessary.

I think it's not really statistically significant, though. It might just be a vocal minority/silent majority thing.

  27. Manga A = Yuureitou

As for Manga B, that's a bigger challenge, but I'm working on it.

  29. Manga A, inspired by a Novel in 1898, mystery, horror, serial murders, sounds like a biography of my great grandpa Jack the Ripper...

I hope someone make manga of me Serial Rapist!!!

  30. manga B. since it offer some big world to explored.

  31. A
    >Haunted Tower
    >Horror

It seems to have good art and mysteries are usually good. Above negative points though lead me to choose B.

  32. Both sound good, but I voted for B. I love me some world exploration.

  33. do you have reason why you dant want to revealed it ?

    1. As I told Spore (another great scanlator) above, I didn't want it to turn into Team Medical Dragon vs. Time of Eve. However, it didn't seem to have any effect at all, so I guess it didn't matter after all.

  34. B, please! I'm just not interested in mystery/horror.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I like the sound of A's plot, but B definitely wins in the art department (IMO, anyway).

Under any other circumstance, I'd vote for B. However, since B already has an anime adaptation of some sort (even if the manga is a spinoff), I'd rather give A a shot.

Not like it matters, since the poll is closed and B seems to be the clear winner.
