Release
ReadmePatched ISO:
I was too lazy to write an ISO patcher program this time around, but I'll make one next time.
Notes
Some terms are different from the LP, because it either just didn't work out for the translation ("super highschool-level" was just too long for the dialogue and certain assets, so it was shortened to "super") or because of my personal preferences (the school name was translated to "Mount Hope Academy"). That said, I want to know what everyone feels about the translation choices.I don't think I'm that great at localizing lines from certain characters like Junko, so I might need some help on that.
DREditor
The editor was also updated.- "Home screen language" and "Button order" now applies to both the home screen and the save/load screens.
- A bug in the GIM export code that causes the PSP to crash was fixed. If the quantized image had less colors than the maximum number of colors that the palette can support, then the old DREditor didn't pad the palette with more colors when it should have.
- Javascript:
- Added a "loadScript(filename)" function that loads another Javascript file in the "src" folder to reduce redundant code and translations.
- The "load" and "loadGIM" functions now also look into the "orig" folder in the same way it looks in the "src" folder" if it doesn't find the file in the "src" folder. For example:
- "src/fla_734_pak.js" calls "loadGIM" on "001.png"
- DREditor looks at "src/fla_734_pak/001.png"
- If that file doesn't exist, then it attempts to read "orig/fla_734_pak/001.png"
- If that file doesn't exist, then it throws an error.
- Note: The editor doesn't make the "orig" folder itself. I just put this feature in there to make managing assets easier.
I'll put the source files of the translation up on Github later. Feel free to give me any comments and suggestions.
Any relation to Tengan Toppa?
ReplyDeleteIf you meant Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, there's none. The Let's Play could tell you more about it, but the SA forum is currently closed for those who don't have an account (there's a link to it in /a/non's previous post). It's a mystery visual novel about high schoolers being coerced to murder each other.
DeleteI sadly don't have anything to test the release with, so I can't be of any help...
Is someone still working on a translation over at the forum? I saw people talking about it during my LP marathon. Somebody even managed to add textboxes http://lpix.org/sslptest/index.php?id=2685
They are *still* working at it, though the last update has been some time ago. Admiral H. Curtis and the OP over there said, they were reworking the script, though the OP of course has to deal with the current LP and the then after coming DR Zero novel and the DR2 LP (I truly hope, that the efforts won't vanish suddenly). Well, status unknown. I was wondering if it would be possible to coordinate the translation attempt on SA with this one, as it is a great and ambitious project (good thing this is more of a linear VN).
DeleteThe guy doing the LP sent me a message that was less than cordial after I posted the first version of DREditor, so I don't think we'd be able to get along that well. If they're really committed to translating DR1, then I'm fine with that, because, to be honest, I really want to translate SDR2 more than DR1. I hope DREditor will be of help to them.
DeleteStill, I want to put a ROM translation effort on the map, which is why I will continue this until they make a move.
(Though I know that I would have to get the DR Zero novels out of the way first.)
DeleteYou could shorten "Super High-school level" to "SHSL" where it doesn't fit. I dunno, it seems blasphemous to me to replace it with plain old "super".
DeleteWould it be possible to simply omit the "level" and justsay "super high-school"? The "level" at the end always sounded a bit clunky to me. Personally, I'd be fine keeping it at just "super".
DeleteI would be interested in this, seems cool.
ReplyDeleteAbout the translation though, I'd assumed the name Mount Hope Academy was part of the irony, which gets removed if it's translated to Despair Academy(as in the screenshot, didn't play your patched iso)
My PSP keeps crashing about a minute in. The screen scrolls down with Naegi at the gate and then switches to black, I see "Makoto Naeji" for about 10 seconds on a screen of black and then the PSP turns off.
ReplyDeleteAbout "Super High School-Level" you could just say HS instead. The comic book Ninja High School has been titled NHS for ages and people know what's what. I think HS is a commonly understood abbreviation.
I noted that the help screen has several cut of words. I'm sure you had noted this already though.
Anyway, I'm pretty excited about this project and just getting to see DR in English on my PSP even for a minute really rocks! I hope you'll continue on.
Thanks!
DeleteCan you check if the original works on your PSP?
http://www.nyaa.eu/?page=torrentinfo&tid=268032
I downloaded that and it did not even boot up but it did give me an error code that I looked up. Basically I was on 5.00 and I had to update the PSP to whatever DR likes. I updated to 6.60 as that seemed like the most newest one and I immediately noticed changes. I got a monobear logo at the very start of the loading before your message, a cutscene before Naegi appears and I did get past the Naegi freeze. I'll play and test it out some more for any other bugs. Thanks again!
DeleteI got to play though the translated part and I must say it's a great job. I've seen about 5 or so mistakes (capitalizations, spellings and splitting the text correctly), but nothing to be embarrassed about. It's very professional for a first release and better than I had expected it to be!
DeleteI do have to admit that I am a bit shocked about Kuwata's first name. Was that intentional or did you not play very far into this game?
@8:12PM: Thanks, and keep me posted about any more bugs.
Delete@Rusty: Thanks!
I've played through both games. I was a little split over Reon/Leon, but in the end I decided to choose Reon because it shouldn't be 100% obvious. I'll explain it as Sayaka wanting to make it seem like numbers, because even in the Japanese version she didn't have to choose to spell out his name that way.
@Rusty: Oh, and can you list the mistakes if you remember them?
DeleteI'm actually very poor in my grammar skills and two of the mistakes are actually correct. "Homo sapien" and "Bigfoot" are both supposed to be capitalized. I had to look them up to be certain. I don't think I've ever seen them correctly capitalized.
DeleteI do recall one word having a stray 'a' after an 'ing.' ****inga. That one was almost towards the very end of the prologue.
There was a split word. I think it was "have" where the h is on line one and then ave on line two. I think there was one other word like that as well.
I'll give it another play tonight and make proper notes. If it's stuff like comma usage, then I really cannot help there.
I did learn a lesson. On the selection screen I was playing around and in no way should anyone select the 4th option. That creates a file in Japanese that crashes the game. Luckily deleteing the file makes the game work again. I'm certain that I was warned not to do this, but I was curious anyway thinking I would get bonus stuff to look at for doing it.
I'll give it another play though tonight and check for mistakes.
OK, I went though it again and I found a lot of mixed usage of punctuation and I don't know if that's important or not. I'll see "? "! ". as well as ?" !" ." And some times the colors of them is inconsistently done. Really small stuff, but it happens fairly often. I don't really know which is the proper way to do those things to pick out which ones are wrong.
DeleteHere is the obvious mistakes I found:
Sakyaka -- "That's right. There 's no doubt about it..." --- an extra space in there's.
Vault Door -- "Wh-What's this... hunk of mental." --- Metal obviously, not mental.
Naegi while thinking about Sakura -- "maybe the strongest teenage female Homo Sapiens ever," --- shouldn't that be Homo Sapien, singular?
Sayaka -- "Naegi, you said that things happened and you somehow fell asleep, right?" --- ',right?" is in blue Naegi thoughts lettering. I forgot what color character speak lettering is done in.
Naegi -- "The Gym...huh" --- Should this have a question mark at the end?
Monokuma -- "will be living together in this school and forbidden f rom going outside!" --- f and rom is split and on different lines.
Monokuma -- "Killing someone..." --- The ellipsis font is inconsistent with all the other ellipsis usage that I've noted.
Naegi -- "Oowada pushed Hagakure aside and surprised Monokuma with his boominga voice." --- boominga, an unwanted a.
Alright, thank you so much. I'll be counting on you in the future.
DeleteWill we be able to patch this download with future releases or will we have to start fresh after each release?
ReplyDeleteYes, patches will be compatible with previous releases.
DeleteIt's awesome that someone is doing this! I hope you can gather more people to help you out, I'm sure there are lots of us out there who want to play this game but lack the sufficient nihongo nouryoku.
ReplyDeleteIncredible. It's been a while that I played Danganronpa.
ReplyDeleteI could understand all of it, but I used the dictionary a lot!
I just finished Super Danganronpa 2.
Wow this is a lot of great effort put into translating this game. I guess it must be pretty hard. Not that I'd know anything about it.
ReplyDeleteJust wanted to say Thanks, really looking forward to your further efforts translating this intriguing game
ReplyDeleteGosh, the torrent is too darn slow. So I just downloaded from Mediafire. Sorry, I can't really help much. But I'll do what I can. And right now I'll be seeding as much as I can, though it's stuck at 99.9%.
ReplyDeleteKeep it up, yo! Thanks for what you're doing. And I can't wait to try it.
hey /a/non, me name is bobo. And is this only translated until the prolugue. I would appreciate it if u can translate the whole game >_<. it must be hard but you cool dude! I couldnt use SA for some reason. It told me to pay for membership ;_;. Most people said there would never be an official translation of DA series and i think thats true since the second series is already out. me email bohua98@gmail.com . oh and i dont know how to install this. ;p im not a pro IT person so if you can make a vdo tutorial that would be awesome. >_< thankyou!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteNot /a/non, but you should be able to read the Let's Play again by now.
DeleteYou only need to click the links provided under the "patched ISO", from either Mediafire, Speedyshare, or Nyaa (torrent). Choose only one website to download them all. (It's best to download from Mediafire instead.) Click the numbers to download each part.
Google "7z" and download. You'll need it to open (or right-click) on your files in the future.
Once you have all the files and 7z installed, right-click the first file, move your cursor to '7-Zip', and click 'Extract Here'.
Hope that helps.
thanks (° w °)
DeleteI applaud to you on translation so far! Very well done, but there are some things to be checked in order (beside the ones stated from a previous comment, which I agree on), such as:
ReplyDelete- The "Anyways". It might be better to remove the 's', leaving it as "Anyway".
- Kuwata says "What up?" instead of "What's up?".
- During the first part of Sakura's introduction, her last name Oogami is "Ookami".
- One of the dialogues with Sakura where "she begain" instead "she began".
- One portion with "Rundenberk" instead of "Rudenberk".
- A portion of Monokuma's dialogue: You guys are so full of talent that you're the "hopes of the world"! It could be shortened to "world's hope", but I suppose you have your reason for this.
- Another portion of Monokuma's dialogue: will be living together in this school and (be) forbidden from going outside!
- Monokuma: "Make my heart race!", instead of "Makes my heart race!"
- Monokuma: "You guys sure have thick skulls." "You guys sure are thick-headed." would be more natural.
- Monokuma: "Kill all you want, then kill so(me) more, and kill kill kill kill kill kill kill kill kill kill"
- Hagakure: "How long are you going to keep this up for?" It might be better to omit the "for" in his question.
- "Drop the joke".
- "It was the sound of Oowada kicking up the floor."
And I wonder why you decided to use the following:
- Celes' last name.
- Monokuma's "ehehe" replacing "upupu".
A question: is the "Space Journey" clip included in the .iso? It didn't seem to play at the beginning.
Thank you once again, /a/non.
Hmm. Maybe it's just where I live and who I talk to often, but I thought that people use "what up" as a more casual "what's up".
DeleteAnd the Space Journey clip plays for me. What firmware are you using?
DeleteTested it out with the latest JPCSP emulator on Windows 32bit with a couple of tweaks. The game immediately skips on the Space Journey clip and the Dangan Ronpa opening.
DeleteJPCSP doesn't fully support this game. For example, loading saves doesn't work.
DeleteIs that so? That's strange. They work fine with my saves. What part of the saves don't work?
DeleteReally? For some reason, after select the save I want to load, the game wouldn't load it at all; it would go back to the main menu.
DeleteAnyway, I know that those movie clips get automatically skipped on JPCSP for some reason, both on the original ROM and the patched rom.
I see. If you need to see the configuration for it, I'll post soon after.
DeleteAll right. That's too bad, but thanks.
What do you guys think about "A+++" as a alternate translation to "super high-school level"? I think it conveys "better than their high school peers" as good or better than "SHSL", but it's kinda weird for things that you don't get a grade on (like gambling and gaming).
ReplyDelete"Super" or "Super High-School" seems more readable than "A+++". "Super" is fine as it is.
DeleteI prefer "Super High School", "SHSL" and even "Super" to "A+++". Besides what you said about some specialities, the "Super" joke in SDR2's title is kept. And it sounds more ridiculous, which I feel to be part of the point.
DeleteI don't think the "Super" in SDR2 is supposed to be reflect that, because it's in katakana (スーパー) rather than kanji (超). It's supposed to be a joke about how retro video games tend to have the word "Super" in their names, considering SDR2's ending.
Deletehow do you chang the script file txt to english ?? I still don't get it (sorryfor my english I am korean so..) i wanna translate it too...
ReplyDeleteIs there a simpler set of instructions on how to get the DREditor to work? A more detailed guide or perhaps a video of some sort?
ReplyDelete(I was trying to get through the game translating it myself (my japanese is very limited) and the kanji was literally taking me hours to decipher! I couldn't get through barely any of the prologue. I'd love to be able to play it because just reading it really is just half of the experience.)
Ahaha, sorry, I'm terrible at documentation. I'll make a better guide with pictures.
DeleteThank you!
DeleteI couldn't stop noticing thi domain is a .com.ar domain, are you Argentinean?
ReplyDeleteDREditor doesn't seem to launch; it doesn't give an error or anything, it just... doesn't do anything. I'm using JRE 7 update 9 (64-bit) on Windows 7, if that helps?
ReplyDeleteI actually got it to run, but I am getting this error:
DeleteException in thread "main" java.nio.file.NoSuchFileException: \raw\umdimage.dat

Make a Patch for the Untouch ISO... anyone don't want to redownload the Game can give it a try: http://survfate.blogspot.com/2012/11/dangan-ronpa-partial-translation-patch.html
ReplyDeleteKeep up the good work, and thanks for trying to translate this game.
ReplyDeleteOMG when I nearly lost all hope that this brilliant game got trans, when I google and find this site its just like find an oasis in Sahara :x
ReplyDeleteThank you very much for translating this game! I've enjoyed your other manga translations, and is looking forward to seeing your translation for this game!
ReplyDeleteAlthough right now there seems to be two other groups working on this too, I hope you'll still continue on with this project!
For some reason I can't go past Naegi waking up in the classroom D: When I'm supposed to investigate it, my botton for X (which is Z) won't work at it. So I'm stuck pressing every key in my keyboard.
ReplyDelete(I've tried changing the control pad but even then it won't work)
Please, has anybody got any ideas of what could it be?
