Kodansha Raws

Looking my list of projects, it's no secret that my favorite publisher is Kodansha, with Kadokawa as a close second. So when Kodansha, in response to the earthquake and, more importantly, Shueisha releasing WSJ 2011-14 for free and looking altruistic (even though Weekly ASCII did it first), said that they're releasing 9 issues from 6 different magazines online for free, I just had to check it out.

It turns out that Kodansha uses CrochetTime, which has been cracked by Nagato already. It took a bit of work to find out the differences between Kodansha and Voyager Store, but in the end, it was cracked. All 9 issues, 4 of which haven't been officially released as of this writing (Evening was released but then got retracted), have been ripped; that's a total of 3524 pages. Well, it's free anyways.

Magical Girl Kazumi Magica ch 3 script

In an unexpected turn of events, Kazumi Magica is the only part of the franchise that isn't horribly delayed. I don't know whether to be happy or not.

From some spoiler pictures that I had seen, I thought that this was going to be episode 3 all over again...but then it flipped me the bird and went off in its own direction. That's not to say that it isn't getting interesting, though I'm glad that the series is following its own path.

I'm slightly disturbed at the revelation with Platina's mom. If Platina's mom had to make the Berlitz family emblem as well, it means that she was in the Berlitz family when she was young, which may imply one of the following:

1. Both Platina's mother and father were born into the Berlitz family, and the Berlitz family supports incest.
2. Both Platina's mother and "father" were born into the Berlitz family, but her biological father is actually dead and the person who she thinks is her father is her uncle or someone else in the Berlitz family.
   
3. Only Platina's mother was born into the Berlitz family, and her father joined the Berlitz family as a result of Sinnoh's marriage practices.
4. Only Platina's father was born into the Berlitz family, and her mother joined the Berlitz family as a result of her marriage. She had to make the family emblem when she was young as well, which may mean that they married in their early teen years.
5. Only Platina's father was born into the Berlitz family, and the marriage between Platina's mother and father was arranged when they were young. Mrs. Berlitz made the emblem in anticipation of the marriage in her early teens, and got married later.
6. New one: Platina's mother was adopted into the Berlitz family when she was young.
   

None of those implications sound very good, though I may just be overthinking this.

Anyways, as you all know, this is the last chapter of the DP arc. I thought that it was more character-driven than usual, which was slightly disappointing but understandable. Now that all of the characters are fully developed (except Looker), I guess Platinum will be nonstop action.

I wonder what happened to Riley vs. Saque.

Out of my impatience, I decided by myself that the joint just wasn't working out. Therefore, I'm picking this up myself, now with volume raws. Releases will be sprinkled throughout the next few weeks. Based on what Kanapox told me, I think Animexis will still be doing Spanish retranslation.

Anyways, this manga reminds me of Destroy and Revolution, but Nanika started earlier. I could never get used to Mori Kouji's art in Holyland, though.

By the way, I finally confirmed that the title is supposed to be incorrect, in line with the main theme of this manga. If I had to translate it, it would be "Am I doing something wrung?" or something like that. Unfortunately for me, all of the chapter titles are incorrect too. The first chapter title should be "We can't walk in a strait line". I suppose that I misread the "mossugu" (from "massugu", or "straight") as "mou sugu".

Young Ace 2011-04 scanning has been delayed, NOT due to the earthquake, tsunami, nuclear meltdown, and other assorted apocalyptic events over in Japan, to the end of this month, and so is 7o3x ch 5.

I've come to a realization that manga series that are fun to read are not necessarily fun to translate. For example, this chapter had 400-500 text bubbles in 23 pages. I can see why so many groups have dropped this.

Be aware that I may drop the series after I finish this case, or I might have to seriously rethink the way I'm approaching this, like doing a joint or hiring some people. In order to keep the quality consistent and source files open for dependent groups, I decided to turn down KAW's offer for the rest of this case (well, it's more like I never responded to their mail). In case you don't F5 Manga-Updates all day long like me, Easy Going Scans just picked up the File series (the first one), so that could be a small possibility.

About Pokemon Special BW numbering

I'm getting sick of people not being able to do simple arithmetic, so let's end this once and for all.

The problem with Pokemon Special's magazine serialization is that it jumps around a lot. Not just between the magazines, but within the magazines too. The first two published chapters, which were in the same issue, weren't even continuous. Just because it's the third published chapter doesn't make it the third actual chapter.

To put it in simple terms, just because x > 2, doesn't make x = 3. Okay?

The point of me calling each chapter "chapter 1" or "chapter 2" is just for me, Manga-Updates and others to keep track of how many chapters I have released. It's pointless for me to use the order at which the chapters were published, because then more people would just ask me for the missing chapters, like what's happening with Mudazumo, and it's really a meaningless number. Even the numbers that I use are more consecutive than the publishing order.

No one really knows what the actual chapter numbers are, except for the authors, publisher, and maybe Viz. There's 10 or so chapters published so far, and it still isn't connecting. When we finally figure the numbers out, I'll post an exchange table and request changes with M-U. I'll also redo ch 1-4 with the official English names for the Pokemon species, locations, etc. (probably not names).

You want the other chapters? Donate at least US$40 for each issue (or shipment, if I buy them together), because international shipping with Amazon Japan, which is the only place that could possibly have the issues, costs at least 3000 JPY. Or get someone in Japan to scan the issues for me.

On a somewhat related note, I thought that the earthquake would make the yen fall (so I can import for less US dollars), but in the end, it reached a new peak: 81.89 JPY to US$1. Fucking speculators.

Strangely enough, Viz is publishing 2 volumes of Pokemon Special Black and White this July, which is an interesting move on their part. I've only translated about 100-120 pages of BW, which is half of a volume. I don't think I've missed 300 pages of BW by forgoing the two other magazines, but I have no idea.

About Reburst, it...looks kinda stupid, to be honest. The dude combines with his Pokemon, like in one of the later seasons of Digimon:

Since Pokemon Special is already effectively weekly (it isn't actually weekly, but it acts as if it is), I cannot pick up another weekly. If you look at my past year, I've only translated about 200 chapters. After April 2011, I will be translating:

If you add up all of the estimated number of chapters (weekly = 52 chapters, biweekly = 26, monthly = 12, bimonthly = 6), you get 164. The actual amount is smaller, because of breaks, especially with Mudazumo (about a break every 3 chapters). Also, this doesn't take into account the page rates of each manga. Nevertheless, that leaves barely enough room for Pokemon Reburst. I would rather dedicate that space to other (ended) manga, and other hobbies.

The only conceivable ways in which I would pick up Reburst is if 1) I go crazy or 2) an overwhelming majority of fans want me to drop Special and pick up Reburst. Both of them seem fairly unlikely at this moment. Besides, if there is a overwhelming majority, then a bigger group would've already picked it up.

I would be willing to mentor (but not directly lead or manage) a new group if someone else gathers enough dedicated members, including another translator.

Anyways, back to Special, it seems that the last issue was a big fat lie. It is continuing in Shogaku Yonensei. The notice that I cut out did say that it was ending, but I guess it just meant that the arc is ending, not the entire serialization. I think that this is another arc of BW.

Online Manga Downloader 0.0.6

I might as well start calling Nagato "Prometheus", because he has brought fire down from the heavens once again. Well, fine, Prometheus only did it once in the original story before he was punished, but you get the idea.

This time, Voyager Store's CrochetTime was cracked. It's a special ActiveX plugin (on Windows). Nagato reversed engineered it from assembly. It turns out that the plugin doesn't rely on any authentication at all. That's right -- this code can download for-pay books and magazines on the Voyager Store. That includes the first 100 volumes of Golgo 13 (out of 158), the 3 newest issues of Morning Two (Saint Young Men, Hen Zemi), etc. Currently, because Nagato hasn't cracked the code for decrypting books stored in plain text (I think?) I haven't implemented the code for parsing other kinds of book files, the scraper is limited to scraping products classified under "Anime and Manga" in Voyager Store, but it is capable of downloading many products, free or not.

I also added Manga On Web, for all volumes of Say Hello to Black Jack, and "Bokuman". The site layout is kinda shitty and hard to parse, so the scraper for that doesn't work very well.

The download info format was changed yet again to remove some redundant fluff (the class names), so it's "manga_download_info_3.yml" now. It is not compatible with 0.0.5.

I have no idea how the Japanese manga scanning scene works, but I guess that the scanner responsible for Evening just rips Moyashimon regularly and leaves the issues around to rip Noririn later when he feels like it. I feel like this manga is lacking something. And no, I don't mean that it needs a Martin Luther King Jr. quote on the front cover as well (well, she certainly had a dream). Maybe it's chapter titles that doesn't have any (hard-to-translate) puns or food references...
