It just occurred to me while reading the 7o3x thread on 2ch that some characters from series that I translate are still in Manga Saimoe, which is in its second preliminary round. You can play the world's most fascinating tactical voting game with them if you so wish:

Auctions

As you all might know, Young Ace is the magazine in which the Eva manga is serialized. That means that it usually comes with some Eva collectibles. I'm not much of a figure guy, so I've opened one of them (and sold it to a friend who really wanted it). I figure that it might be time to sell them to people who want them more and use the money to fund my expensive manga importation.

I have a Mari figure, a Rei figure, and two of the same Asuka figures. I actually got three of those Asuka figures because of a mistake by the vendor, but the third one is the one that was sold. I haven't opened them and I'm terrible at photography, so have these photos from a julajp instead.

The Rei figure is being sold as a set with one of the Asuka figures to save on shipping.

Online Manga Downloader 0.1.0

It's been about 6 months since I've last updated. I've been working hard all over those six months to redesign this; I totally didn't just pull this out of my ass today.

Anyways, the more I worked with the past versions, the more I realized that the scraper was a stupid idea. Well, it had its own merits, but it was slow, memory-hungry, and hard-to-maintain. I removed pretty much everything and made a new UI, which just takes in the URL to the viewer and the type of viewer. For example, if I want the first chapter of Ryuushika Ryuushika, I'd just give it "http://www.square-enix.com/jp/magazine/ganganonline/comic/ryushika/viewer/001/_SWF_Window.html".

There's a lot to improve on this UI (like telling the user when the download finishes), but it's fully functional. Feel free to tell me any comments, suggestions, and bugs. Source code is in another branch.

Comic Hoshi Shin'ichi ch 11 (The Gate to Space)

This series needs a bit of background. Hoshi Shin'ichi is a sci-fi writer famous for his really short fiction works. He produced hundreds of "short short stories" from the 1960s until his death in 1997. The short stories have been adapted to various short TV fillers and finally a manga series from 2001 to 2004. A week ago, the magazine Mystery Bonita announced that it was going to resume the series in November after 7 years of hiatus.

As you'll find, the shorts vary quite a bit. I want to say that his style reminds me of Rod Serling's, but only certain chapters, such as "Fate" and "Wonderful Life" share the Twilight Zone feel. Here's the TV adaptation of "Wonderful Life":

This chapter, "The Gate to Space," is fairly different from that. Personally, I think it's my favorite, and not (just) due to its artist. That's why I chose to translate this chapter first. The stories are all unrelated, so order doesn't matter anyways.

My pacing for this series will be fairly slow in these two months, because I don't want to go back on the schedule that I posted, but I'll definitely finish all 18 chapters in this year. I'd be up for a joint project if some other group wants to do one.

My raws are currently unavailable because I'm manually scanning this, but I think I've seen this volume or the other one get uploaded onto Share early this year.

Mudazumo Naki Kaikaku ch 49 (The Lion's Kindred 1)

Besides the whole "resurrecting a completed series thing," this is slightly complicated because I've already released a chapter 49, which was changed to chapter 48 in the volume. Anyways, I'm following the volume chapter numbers, which makes this chapter 49. The magazine calls this chapter 50, but fuck them.

Anyways, the new arc is called "The Lion's Kindred." Now without Koizumi, Japan is low on "mahjong power," so they find a few random people to fill in the gap. I seriously hope that it'll tie in with the political world more, though. I'm slightly disturbed by the use of original characters for this manga.

Donations

I've received $135 over the past few weeks. I want to thank everyone who donated very much. Together with the cancellation of good! Afternoon and Kindai Mahjong, I think the next year or two will be very stable.

I just changed the donation system slightly. Previously, I had a goal system, but I think that that suggests that I want donators to cover all costs, which is not what I want. Therefore, I got rid of it.

I just realized that our current "contract" has a problem: what if I forget to update everyone? For example, did you know that the current balance is -$6.48? I didn't either, until I did the math this morning. Anyways, I'm putting a new clause (just because I can, but it isn't bad for you anyways): "The deadline is seven days after I release the scanlated chapter that broke the -$20.00 limit." That means that the current deadline is seven days after I release chapter 11, should there be no donations before then. Fair enough?

Random Raws: good! Afternoon #17, Kindai Mahjong 2011-08-01 & 2011-08-15, Pokemon Special BW ch 9

I'm ending good! Afternoon importation because the Chinese group agreed to share their Nanika raws. To be honest, I don't like the manga in this magazine that much, and I can download the manga that I do like (except for Nanika and Demon 72) from Share. Anyways, if I ever do have to import more issues, I'll make sure to scan them.
